Catherine Earnshaw: Victorian Portrait, Feminist Wall Art

£77.00

From wild and free-spirited to restrained and constrained, Catherine Earnshaw is a modern literary heroine who refuses to be tamed by the expectations of her Victorian culture. Unconcerned with conventional values, her story of rebellion and desire for freedom resonates powerfully with modern women today.

I connected with the Moors on a visit to the Bronte's Parsonage museum years ago, feeling the same tension and desire for freedom that Catherine experienced in Wuthering Heights. This portrait captures Catherine’s inner conflict – her longing for joy and freedom, against her Victorian restraints. We see her lost in thought, refusing to succumb to the expectations of her era.

Compared to her Renaissance and Regency counterparts, she looks more mature and more evolved in her thought process through education.

This image is part of Women in Quiet Rebellion. This project aims to give a voice to women that didn't have one throughout history, connecting the dots and inviting them to a scene that reflects their oppression and the ways they had to learn to rebel "quietly" from the place that society gave them, accepting their lot, feeling under pressure to conform.

Their only form of escapism was to rebel inside, moving things slowly like a butterfly's wings, creating a snowballing effect across history. This project reflects the story of all these women who could not use their voices. I’ve found my inner self profoundly resonating with the paintings of Artemisia Gentileschi, not that I've endured similar oppression. Still, since childhood, this desire to be a free and independent woman was always rooted in me.

My idea with this project is to continue to rustle feathers, building up the quiet rebellion and bringing out that powerful voice that I have tamed for so long! I have reached the Victorian Period and am looking to move on to the next era.
